This book was a total surprise to me. It was on sale at a reading event I went to over the weekend, and I saw it and thought, "yeah, I've heard good things about this book."
You know by the cover it's going to be something tragic, but I was still surprised at every turn. The narrative, combined with the beautiful artwork, reminds me of the best parts of Studio Ghibli films. (In my opinion, this would actually make a great one!)

This coming of age graphic novel deals with some difficult topics in an ideal setting: a family's summer cottage.
Rose is on the verge of womanhood and tests the boundaries of her childhood by spending her summer watching horror movies and following the local gossip about a pregnant teen. There's tension in the house due to the loss her mother is still dealing with regarding a miscarriage. The summer cottage carries many triggers for her and it drives a wedge between mother and daughter.
Artwork is amaaaazing! The scenes in which water are present are incredibly realistic and the bluish tint of the artwork is very appealing.
The complex storylines make for layered read worthy of discussion.
Recommended for teens and up.

This book made me uncomfortable, but I guess it’s because it’s so realistic. Yes, it left me feeling a little down, but I admire the author and illustrator for bringing this story across in such a raw and real way. For “just” an 1.5 hour read, I think it had an impact and i’m sure I’ll be thinking about it from time to time.
2.5 stars- The art was beautiful and I really enjoyed the journey that the characters were going on. I felt like the author and artist did a great job of representing how a young teenaged girl would be processing this complicated situation with her mom, crushing on an older boy, and jealousy. But my issue stems from the fact that I feel like Rose didn't grow or learn from her mistakes and the things that she said. She was more or less the same person at the end of the book as she was at the beginning. This book had a really promising start but ended up disappointing me a little in the end.
