Other people have mentioned that this volume is loosely plotted, which is true to the nth degree. The plot is not a priority, in the same way that a "plot" to your average summer might feel like a line in retrospect, but it's more of a winding path of moments that string together if you draw that line for yourself. Like a conspiracy board! I think the generally awkward vibes feel very true to life-- or a kind of life-- and I really enjoyed that. Where the book is at its most breathtaking isn't the story (though some of the moments with Rose's mom are really heartbreaking) but rather the moments it paints, the coarseness of brushes and the tenderness of time. I think where it's at its most interesting is where Rose and Windy learn certain hard lessons for the first time about the world, that weird period of time where you're exposed to the world but have little knowledge to combat it with. Rose is wrong several times about some really important things and that's *great* in coming-of-age stories, wrong in a way where the world doesn't have to uplift her into getting it right. It's more of the slow realization that gets to her, and is ongoingly getting to her-- it's a neat trip.

Very sad and realistic

One of my all-time favourites. A gorgeous piece of art that accomplishes one of the best things that graphic novels can do over traditional fiction- show, don’t tell

This One Summer did a good job of reminding me of summers from my teenage years. It’s the story of a girl whose family has changed a lot over the previous year and an evolving friendship worth a less-mature friend. Rose, the main character, is introspective and trying to sort out her feelings about her family and her interest in an older boy who works at the local mini-mart. The illustrations are good.

I’d say if you have an hour and nothing better to read, this is a good option.

Such a great read - dealing with prepubescence as adult issues feature in the background. The way every character is written is fantastic. Absolutely lovely read.
