I enjoy service industry memoirs a lot, and while Chisholm's perspective (young white guy unsubtly LARPing George Orwell but in 2012) is cause to be a bit dubious, he paints effective portraits of his fellow waiters and I did like learning about the inner-workings and back-stabbing tensions of a mid-tier (touristy with aspirations) French restaurant.

Despite being quite a 'wordy' book, I found that I raced through this. It was very compelling, with so much going on - it was easy to become lost at times, and the various people confused me. It was a darker book than I was expecting, with some very bleak parts! However I really appreciated the honesty and openness with which the hidden sides of Paris were explored. I do wonder how much of this was an accurate reflection of Chisholm's life, the introduction explains that he has combined various experiences, which makes me wonder how much artistic licence was used. And I think it would have helped to learn a little more about Chisholm himself early on in the book, as sometimes I found him frustrating and somewhat annoying. However in general I really enjoyed this.
