this is my first introduction to miss rebecca kuang (thank you Noe) and from now on i will be reading everything that she writes. i think she is brilliant and that shows in her writing. the historical context is so well researched and the critics of colonialism, sexism and racism of the time are written with intention but blend perfectly into the story. i devoured this book and now i don’t know what to do with my life.

I wasnt ready for how much impact this book would have on me. The middle and end could be a completely different genre, but i wouldnt say that it hurts the book in any way. It has very emotional descriptions of friendship that i absolutely love

this book is just…way longer than it needs to be. especially in the first half or so there are long stretches where nothing is really happening and that almost made it a chore to keep reading. i definitely enjoyed this much more once it finally picked up but i’m also not entirely satisfied with how it was wrapped up…idk this is a hard one to rate lol

(also a bit too info dump-y to me at times but that might just be a bit of a personal problem as someone who currently studies translation and has heard a lot of these things a billion times atp)

This is the best book I’ve read this year so far, so much so that I bought another copy to annotate it

I don't like when book is treating me like I'm stupid. I know that colonialism is bad and I don't need Kuang to tell me this on every page.
Repetitive, boring, with characters without any depth (they are just pure statements without any character) It's so plotless AND when plot is finally starting to happen IT'S SO RIDICULOUS I CAN'T FUCKING STAND THIS
I don't get this book and I am just irritated by it bc it should've been a nonfiction, an essay or something like that.
Now it's just a bad novel
