It was very slow paced and took some time getting into, which was very worth it. Rf Kuang has the ability to capture a reader and truly set them into a world where you don’t know what will happen. Spoilers: the way robins character took a huge shift and you could truly see not only development but a disastrous change in him. He finally chose a side, one that led him and his brother to die without knowing if what they did mattered. This book took up so many issues and I loved seeing how a world built up on silver could also be its downfall, or so it seemed. At least that is the truth for the poor. I would have loved to know the aftermath and continue both Victoires and Lettys story. I love the plot twists but unfortunately didn’t connect that much to any of the characters, possibly Ramy if anything.
Overall a much worthy read if you like a strong plot and character mix, but also enjoy politics and real social issues.

kuang genuinely didn't have to do that to me. it took me longer to read, sometimes i was more hooked on it, other times i felt as though i had to step away until my brain was ready to comprehend the onslaught of events (and footnotes. i loved the footnotes but lord were they an info dump at times).

i know some don't love the over explanation, i disagree. i actually really love how she relays the information even if it might come off as... sanctimonious? but, then again. this is an institute that houses some of the most brilliant minds studying in several languages that the common person may never utter a word of. like obviously their pompous attitude will shine through.

genuinely am astounded by the fact that people were trying to brush this book off as some dark academia that's just a bit high-stakes. this book is NOT that and i feel like the people making those opinions didn't actually grasp the meaning of the book.

hated letty. hated her whole white saviour complex and honestly her character just emphasised the divide between people who pretend to understand the suffrage of those that are unlike them, and then the people who actually suffer through it. i also like how racism wasn't the only form of oppression explored - misogyny, classism, the dehumanisation of people that are just a bit different. i love how she touched on all these issues.

i do think this book was stretched out quiteee a bit and it could've been like, 100 pages shorter. but i loved it nonetheless.

AT LAST i did it. she has been conquered. i enjoyed this! soooo full of research and musings on language which were unique and interesting (though got a little relentless near the end). the worldbuilding was delish and creative. i Do think it couldve been like 100 pages shorter though, and that the author did what she tends to do (which is go so hard on the didactic that it loses its potency), but i was kinda expecting that. feeling ready for katabasis now

Jättebra och spännande men slutet förstörde allt :/
