There were things that really bugged me about this book and almost put me off reading it from chapter one. I think half of it was not knowing what the book was about apart from a ‘Babel’ in the heart of Oxford in the 1800s.

Ultimately, the plot and characters swayed me and I became invested. The ending was worth the read and worth ignoring the niggling things that annoyed me as a reader. I want to rate it highly for how it made me feel, so 4 stars reflect that. The language of the book and the way some of the characters spoke took me out of the story a little which made sections harder to read. Based on that alone I would knock off a star. Complicated review but I enjoyed this book even though I didn’t think it would be fantasy!

oh boy

RFK certainly knows how to write devastation! the impact this book had on me would’ve been impossible without such compelling characters and dynamics, and it was brilliant the way they reflected the larger themes at play.

i loved our friend group of four. all of them. yes, letty was a problematic friend and the source of a lot of conflict, but they loved each other through this. that’s the whole point. they were FRIENDS. however flawed their friendship may have been.

the linguistics/ etymology i also found surprisingly fascinating. RFK certainly proved she was getting that PHD. the footnotes were also amazing. sometimes, though, i felt like she got a bit carried away. you can tell she’s passionate about her area of research but it’s like … i don’t know if i need to know ALL of these examples every single time. it didn’t take away though, it made sense since our characters were living and breathing their studies.

overall, it was just so. and. because. and also the. but i digress.
