There were things that really bugged me about this book and almost put me off reading it from chapter one. I think half of it was not knowing what the book was about apart from a ‘Babel’ in the heart of Oxford in the 1800s.
Ultimately, the plot and characters swayed me and I became invested. The ending was worth the read and worth ignoring the niggling things that annoyed me as a reader. I want to rate it highly for how it made me feel, so 4 stars reflect that. The language of the book and the way some of the characters spoke took me out of the story a little which made sections harder to read. Based on that alone I would knock off a star. Complicated review but I enjoyed this book even though I didn’t think it would be fantasy!
