I was a bit disappointed with The Gum Thief. It wasn't nearly as amazing as I had expected.

- I have read all 10 of Coupland's novels (and his 5 non-fiction works). I'm a big fan of his fresh, contemporary style, generously peppered with pop-culture references and current/recent news events...This is his weakest effort however, and suffers from an attempt to plausibly integrate a story-within-a-story (one of the characters is writing a bland, parlour-room, period-style story that, in the end, seemed sadly saw-dusty and...well, just filler, actually)
- the pop-culture references were sharp and very insightful, but this wasn't enough to carry the bulk of the story line
- I will try him again though

As a huge Douglas Coupland fan, I was really disappointed in this book. The story felt hollow and forced and lacked the poignant humor usually contained in his books.

Skip this one and read Jpeg or Generation X instead.

Douglas Coupland, you are bumming me out. I can't finish your books because you make me even more concerned about apocalypse than NPR does. You are still an awesome writer, tho, don't worry.

I liked the 'journey' of the book, but I didn't like the ending

Amazing story. The absurdities mentioned in this book were funny. I could really relate to this book.

If you've read a book by Coupland before, I don't think you'll find anything massively surprising here. It's about modern life, packed brimming with less than successful people living mundane and dull lives, desperately looking for meaning. And, like most of Coupland's work, it's utterly brilliant.
