This was difficult for me to rate. The writing was great as usual and the characters were well developed but it dragged on and on for no real reason. Just because you’re a stellar writer doesn’t mean you need to use all the words!

This book is dark, even for Tana French - particularly the ending. Her books rarely have happy endings but man. She’s great at writing hugely unlikeable characters and then throwing so much shit at them that by the end you just feel sorry for them more than anything else.

This author is gifted at describing things in beautiful, sometime poetic ways. Even with that gift, a good editor could have culled 100 pages from this easily. And nothing would have been lost.

In terms of the mystery, I didn’t find it difficult at all the figure out the killer. The only real question was whether they had help or not and that did keep me guessing.

But the end??
Almost everything after the reveal of the murderer could have been cut. The fist fight? The mental hospital? Who cares?? Why? It added absolutely nothing.
