As I don’t do enough research before I read anything, I didn’t realize this was a short story. To my surprise I finished it quicker than I started. I thought the characters were well established and I felt like the it really pulled me into the life of a girl that is mute by choice. The interactions she had with adults were fascinating because she was seen as an adult in many ways. I guess silence is a sign of maturity in some aspects. I don’t think these are spoilers but I marked it just in case

Thought Provoking!
A fast read that leaves one thinking about life and what it hands you. Are you ready at a young age for death, for growing up fast and more?

Ok story
Ok read. Was rushed and quite predictable. I wanted more. I know it was a short story but I felt the author could have given more.

Well, her mom did not teach her much
Plot: After her dad's death, our heroine decides not to speak again and is left to live with her young promiscuous mother at a lighthouse where she connects with other people living there.
Likes: The story had a nice flow and ending.
Dislikes: I usually read fantasy and/or storied that touch me a bit more emotionally. I expected maybe a bit more from stories in this particular Amazon Originals collection.
Audience: People who don't mind stories about disfunctional families.
Rating: I give this 3/5 stars. It was nice, it just didn't touch me as much as I'd expected.

While less than an hour in length this was an intriguing listen. This was told entirely from 12 year old Adeline’s perspective. Set in 1908 on a small island, she’s faced with her mother’s destructive and abusive behavior.
I really enjoyed the story, particularly Hoffman’s vivid and sometimes chilling writing.
Narration:
Brittany Pressley was a great choice for this short. She has a young voice perfect for Adeline, but still brings the emotional emphasis needed for the plot.

OH MY, Alice, you sure know how to tell a story! I absolutely loved this short story about a young girl, in the 1900's, who stops talking after her father passes away. Her mother is not a very nice person and well, you must read this story, you will not be disappointed!
My thanks to Netgalley and Amazon Original Stories for this advanced readers copy. This book was released in December 2019.
