I don't know what it is about Steinbeck's writing, but his books just pull me in. For such a short story, this one certainly packed a punch. The style was interesting because it really does read like a play while still being a novel(la). Given when it was written, some things haven aged well, but I still couldn't stop reading and really enjoyed this.

I liked this for what it was. It was very accessible and the writing kept me interested, especially the sense of place. I will probably read more of John Steinbeck's work once I'm ready to tolerate a large dose of racism and misogyny again.
