This was a fascinating book and unlike any I've read. I loved the themes of morality, mortality, good vs evil, and science vs spiritualiy. I also loved the pacing of this book. The quick, succinct chapters were a treat. As a fan of superhero stories, it was nice to see a new spin on an old trope. I will definitely be checking out the next book.

4.5 stars. This was such an engrossing read, all the characters are deeply explored and very morally grey. I kept finding myself wanting to sweep certain events under the rug so that I could look at characters as the “good guy” or the “bad guy” but the author makes that impossible to do. As such V.E Schwab captures how no one is purely good or evil, hero or villain, everyone falls somewhere in the middle. The world was so easy to step into that it took no time to be fully immersed. The only reason I wouldn’t give this book 5 stars is my personal dislike of the time jumping narrative. But I did think this narrative was effectively used in the book to keep elements of mystery which could be revealed at a later point for better impact.
