I read this book from the 18th-23rd of Feb as a random pickup from the library. The start of the book was strong and throughout there was good writing and a solid plot, though unoriginal. It was really interesting at the start as i was wrapping my head around all the rules of magic. I initially liked the character and was interested by the switching viewpoints. The middle and the end of the book were just boring. The big revelations such as
wesley was taking to saxony’s sister who’s gone over to the dark side etc
didn’t have an effect on me, not shock nor intrigue. the idea of the book was good but i didn’t like the execution, the characters felt very fake, as in i don’t think that’s what people would do/say/react in that situation. i found it hard to follow. some plot things didn’t make sense like the whole
secret journey to kill the kingpin. to me wesley felt really badly written, he is supposed to be a big tough underboss person yet he’s making jokes and making himself vulnerable around everyone. the kingpin is supposed to be a big powerful evil vessel but the way he speaks and acts doesn’t portray that at all. other minor characters really were not believable.
I did really like the idea of magic sickness, how people can die from poisoned magic, i’ve never seen that in any other book before. I also enjoyed the (minor) romance subplot and I wish it was explored more. Maybe it will be in further books but i just don’t think i’ll read them. Overall i just wasn’t interested in the book and the magic didn’t follow rules like in other fantasy books.
