DNF after 123 pages.
I can't really put my finger on why, but this book just couldn't hook me.
I think it is that I don't care for the characters and setting too much.

This is a heist story set in a dark and murderous city with 4 POVs.
I feel like at over 100 pages I still only know the characters superficially and while the writing and banter is really great and there are some very interesting elements, I constantly find myself putting this down and doing something else, so I decided to stop trying and give up on this book.

My favourite part of the book was the ending. The plot felt a bit flat and there wasn’t much of a desire to carry on. The last twenty pages were exciting but I don’t know if that’s because I skim read it. I liked the ending and will probably read book two at some point but I’m not in a rush to pick it up.

Firstly - this is a book with an introductory map. I know that's important to a lot of people, including myself.
Honestly I found this a very fun and easy read - I enjoyed the personalities of each of the characters, and the plot and worldbuilding were well done. A lot of the twists between this and the second book are very predictable, though I don't necessarily think that's a bad thing.
I don't have a great load to say on this book, only that I enjoyed it enough to immediately run and get the second one, as WARNING this book does end in a huge cliffhanger, so be prepared to get straight onto number two.

I didn't like this book as much as I hoped I would. A SoC-like setup in an interesting world sounded like a great idea, and while the world is interesting and the characters have potential, the writing let me down a bit. I feel like a lot of things were overwritten and telling instead of showing. On top of that, it felt like the author read SoC themselves as well, got inspired, and then insisted on pointing out differences at random moments. Example: Tavia is, in so many ways, the same as Inej. Strong moral compass, tragic back story about losing family, being tied up into a contract that makes her do things she doesn't want - which is fine, I don't mind that - but the moment a page and a half is spent explaining how Tavia is definitely NOT athletic and has a BAD fear of heights (a fact which is, after that point, never relevant or mentioned again) feels very much like the author saying "see? She's soooo different from Inej!"

All in all, a really intriguing and fascinating world and magic system, but it didn't fully reach its potential for me.

A very interesting read. The setup was interesting and the backstory was given at just the right pace, not info dumped or dripfed. Saxony is my favourite character, but the others are pretty awesome as well. The cliffhanger is awful and I'll be watching out for the next part anxiously to find out what happens next!

The language is lovely in this one, with fantastic descriptions everywhere you look. I really enjoyed this. It's a very visual read.

I received a prrof and chose to write an honest review.
