I picked this up solely for the title—“Time is a Mother”, isn’t that just beautiful? I had high hopes for my first Vuong work, but much to my dismay the title was the only thing I liked.

przeczytałam „amazon history of a former nail salon worker” kiedyś AND I CRIED MY HEART OUT, więc chciałam resztę przeczytać i tak się zawiodłam nie wiem

I got a copy of this book from an Ocean Vuong reading where another author interviewed him. He speaks so beautifully, and I loved On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous, but I think I just need to admit to myself that I love his prose, but not his poetry. In this and Night Sky with Exit Wounds, I felt like the form overtook the content. To me, many of the poems felt like songs where the words in the lyrics sound good, but don’t really mean anything. It could very well be that I just don’t get them, but *shrug*

After reading “On Earth We Are Briefly Gorgeous”, I knew I had to pick up this one. Ocean just has such a way with words, and I will always be impartial to the way he writes about his mother, his relationship with her, and her past in Vietnam.
