DNF, I read the ending on Wikipedia and that left me very angry that the book was so slow. It has a good story line, just needed to be cut by 100 pages

3.7 ! (A really strong 3.7)

I really liked this at times and was bored at other times. Sometimes it felt like there was too much going on, and I didn't like the POV shifting every scene. It made the story drag at times because not every character was as interesting. AKA I wanted to be in the Ice Mountain the entire book.

Things I loved: the ending, Jewish characters and traditions done well, strong female characters, and the writing.

I really enjoyed this story. It is a fantasy which is not typically a genre I read, but from the first page I felt connected to the main character, Miryem. She’s a strong female protagonist who doesn’t take crap from anyone, especially not the women in her family. The writing style was approachable and the retelling gave just enough honor to the traditional Rumplestiltskin character without making that aspect too overpowering.

This one left me a little confused at times. Maybe I just have to read it a second time. Very good book.

Seeing the current obsession with Romantasy and spicy books, the lack of romance and spice in this book felt refreshing. As always, Naomi Novik’s characters were nuanced and multidimensional and I especially loved the way Jewish culture was interwoven with fantasy elements. While reading I felt instantly reported to the fantastical world Novik created. The one thing that was kind of missing for me was the overall story arch. The plot seemed to trickle on little by little and I wish there would have been a clearer goal for the characters to achieve. Other than that, great big and a big recommendation!
