Cute story about a boy and his cricket. I enjoyed the evocation of Appalachia in the words, which contained enough action to be interesting as well as descriptive. The illustrations, though, didn't bring that sense of place to the story and were not that noteworthy to my mind.

Jay lives on a farm. He likes to explore the farm, picking up little treasures he finds along the way. By the cow path, Jay finds a cricket. He decides to keep the cricket as a pet and makes a small cage for the cricket. He feeds the cricket, finds that it chirps when it is dark, and becomes attached to the little critter. Soon school starts and Jay wants to bring the cricket to school with him. But the inside of his pocket is dark, so the cricket chirps all the way to school, causing the kids on the bus to go crazy. Jay is a little embarrased but loves his pet. His teacher is understanding and lets Jay tell about his pet during show and tell. The kids come to respect him and can't wait for Jay to bring more cool things to class.

Descriptive prose and simple illustrations (I'm not sure what today's kids think about this style of art). This a good story for kids who like to explore the outdoors or are budding scientists. Jay reminds me of my brother.

Caldecott Honor picture book from 1965. A bit wordy. The art was relatively simple but still good. We get to visit with a rural boy a couple days before his first day of school. And his first day of school. Not sure I'd want to be encouraging kids these days to bring a cricket to school. But it's a kind of sweet slice of life. 3.5 of 5.

This is written by Rebecca Caudill who has a children’s literature award named after her. I thought the story was thoughtful and sweet. It is not action packed like today’s stories and I kinda like that. The kids are used to more going on. I found they didn’t care about a cricket so much.

The art is by someone else and it did nothing for me. It was just blocks of gold color with a few details thrown in. It reminds me a lot of ‘Finders Keepers’. I hope this trend is about over after this book.

The kids were bored by this book. The book is a little long and the nephew asked at one point if we could just read another story. He gave it 1 stars. The niece gave this 1. I thought the story was nice myself. Just a different pacing. I think that is what age gives me. I have patience for a story and I am glad about that.

One part I love is the teacher in this story. The boy brings the cricket to school because he wants to be with it and the cricket starts singing in his pocket. When the teacher asks him to take it outside and he refuses her several times, instead of showing her power, she changes gears and asks him to bring the cricket up for show and tell. She was the wonder of the story. I want to be like her too.
