Loved this book!!! The characters are awesome, very likable. The three cowboys brothers are gorgeous, but all very unique, dealing with a loss in different ways. The story is believable, and left me wanting more. Loved how I got may happily Ever After and a cliffhanger all in one book. I gotta know what happened to Cass, and so will you. I can't wait for book two in the fall. Thanks Laura for a wonderful book.

~ 5 Branded Stars ~

Branded is book one in The Cavanaugh Brothers series by Laura Wright. I’ve been a fan of Laura’s since I picked up my first book the Bayou Heat series and have been wanting to try her other works for some time. I’m not a contemporary reader by heart, but WOW baby, Laura Wright blew me away with Branded and I am most defiantly going to be picking up the rest of the books in this series. I feel in love with the Cavanugh Brothers and really, who can resist a sexy hot cowboy?

Branded is filled with emotion, conflict, drama, suspense and scorching romance, the plot is captivating. I was captured and could not put the book down. I really enjoyed how Ms. Wright put the diary passages of Cassandra Cavanaugh into the story. The emotional suffering everyone went through and are still going through after the loss of Cass, and then to learn about secrets the Cavanugh’s father has kept as well, as the Sheriff who investigated Cass’s death. It’s all so well written and hooks the reader. The characters are fabulous, they have such intense emotional connections. The chemistry between Mac and Deacon scorches the pages and the sex scenes are hot and steamy. I love how there relationship is portrayed along with the snarky dialogue. Mac is amazing. I love how strong and tuff she is. Deacon was also amazing, with his tortured past and hard headed attitude.

The author has created a delightful heartfelt romance with sexy cowboys. We are kept on our toes with some twists and surprises that add spice and depth to the story. I am hooked and can’t wait to read the next book.

First of all, let’s talk about this amazing cover. I must admit, it was the cover who drew me to the book. I mean, hot cowboy, hot SHIRTLESS cowboy with a beautiful background…what’s not to love? And then, I read the synopsis and I wanted this book. I was right. Branded was a great read and I cannot wait for Broken!

I’d also like to say that I love the title of this book, after reading it, it makes perfect sense. And I also love the details on the cover, very well done! I’m impressed. Penguin knows how to design the perfect covers.

Deacon Cavanaugh is rich. Immensely so. He owns a big company and lives in Dallas. Shortly after the death of his father, Everett, Deacon needs to go back to the Triple C Ranch, the ranch where he grew up with his brothers and sister. He doesn’t want it, he hates it and wants to destroy it. He has his reasons. After his little sister’s death, his family went to shit. Especially his mother. Things happened, bad things and because of that he does not want the Triple C Ranch to live anymore. He knows his two brothers, James and Cole, will agree with him but what he doesn’t expect is the surprising news during the reading of his father’s will. He has another brother, Blue, a worker on the ranch. Deacon, still determined to destroy the ranch, offers Blue money, lots of it, for him to sell his parts of the ranch. Meanwhile, enters Mac. The foreman of the Triple C. She’s tough, she loves this ranch more than anything else and she will not let Deacon destroy it, even if she had a big crush on him when she was younger. Mac was Cass’s (Deacon’s little sister) best friend, she was practically born on the ranch and she cared deeply for the three Cavanaugh brothers. Until Cass’s death. She doesn’t know what truly happened but after Cass’s abduction and death, the three brothers left the ranch and never came back. Now, they’re all back and one is determined to destroy her home. But things don’t go as planned. Deacon and Mac grow closer to each other, what will happen when the finale decision is made? Will they choose each other? Will Deacon destroy the Triple C and in the same time destroy his relationship with Mac? Read the book and find out…

I love cowboys. I do. And Deacon Cavanaugh was one hot cowboy. I really liked him. Deacon is a sweet and nice guy, very rich but not arrogant, trying to be the good guy. He is just so desperate to destroy the ranch, he wants it gone and yeah, that must seem heartless and mean but Deacon truly has his reasons. He doesn’t want that just because. It’s deeper than that, it’s important for him, to find peace, to find happiness again, to let go of the past. I loved how passionate he was about his work and everything else around him. How nice he could be with Mac. Understanding, patient, funny. Mac doesn’t know Deacon’s reasons for wanting the ranch gone, she doesn’t understand but she tries and that’s why I loved her. At first, she kinda hates him but then, she realizes that Deacon is not a bad man, she wants to know the true reasons, why does he hate that part of his life so much. Mac is in love with her work, with the horses and saving cows, fixing fences and riding in the sun. She’s like Deacon, passionate. I loved that Mac wasn’t too judgmental with him or with anyone else, actually. She was brave, independent, not too stubborn (not too annoying), strong.

And yes, I loved them together. Laura did a good job with them, I think that they worked great as a couple. They had chemistry and the sexual tension was palpable! What I loved about them was that it wasn’t a hate-love relationship, I’m so done with those, they bore and annoy me. With the circumstances I was afraid it was going to be like that but not at all. They both know the other wants something completely different, they both know that one of them will get hurt at the end but still, they don’t “hate” each other constantly nor do they try to hide their feelings for each other. They just go for it. It wasn’t too sudden either, they didn’t jump each other after 10 pages. Laura took her time at the beginning, explaining everything to us, every sides, and then she brought them together. Their relationship was beautiful, powerful and HOT. Laura knows how to write dirty. I had time to enjoy them as a couple and I loved that as well, they didn’t get together-together just at the end, I had time to read about them as a couple and it was awesome and cute and sweet and hot and nice.

Of course, Branded doesn’t revolves only around them. For one, there is Cass, the little sister. Cass was abducted when she was thirteen and found dead a few days later. Her killer was never found but she kept a diary, a diary never found by the police either. A diary Laura shared with us, only a few pages but it was so interesting and I’m intrigued. In this diary she talks about an older boy, she calls him “Sweet” and Mac knows about him because Cass told her. Mac told the police but they never found anything about him. They dropped the case after several months. But we learn new things in Branded (it takes place 12 years after Cass’s death, if I’m not mistaken), I really wanna know more, especially after that ending!! How could Laura do that?! I WANT ANSWERS!!!

And then there are Deacon’s brothers. James and Cole! Oh my Lord. YES! I want some of that. Seriously, I cannot wait to read their book. Especially Cole’s (he has tattoos everywhere and he’s a professional fighter and he was/is Cass’s twin brother). I already know their heroines, I’m sure for James but not completely sure for Cole but I have a good feeling! ;)

Anyway, read this book. You won’t regret it. The only reproach I have is that I felt like some things were overlooked, especially with Blue and his mother. If you like cowboys, hot sweaty stubborn cowboys you will love this book! Don’t miss it!

Shannon's Thoughts

3.5 Cocktails

I'm not usually a cowboy romance person, but I was intrigued as to what kind of spin Laura Wright would put on a western type romance. I love her paranormal books and really enjoyed her spin at the bad boy tattoo artists, so I figured I'd give this one a try.

This first book in the Cavanaugh Brothers series focuses on older brother, Deacon. He's come back home to get his hands on the family ranch now that his father's passed away. The ranch holds bad memories of the death of his little sister and the torment suffered after she was gone. I found myself both loving and hating Deacon. He was a stubborn ass, hell bent on doing what he wanted regardless of what his brother wanted to do when it came to the ranch. But we saw cracks in his a-hole facade when it came to ranch foreman and his sister's best friend, Mac Byrd.

Makenzie (or Mac) wanted nothing more than to save the ranch she had grown to love. Not only was it a place she called home after her father died, but it kept her close to the memories of her childhood best friend. Mac could be just as stubborn as Deacon, but she was trying to save something that meant a lot to not only her, but to the small town that depended on what the ranch brought in. She may have hated what Deacon was trying to do, but she couldn't deny the feelings she had for him...which instead of being a young girl's crush was now full of a woman's lust.

I liked Mac and Deacon together. She was a little rough around the edges, but she was able to soften Deacon. Show him what was really important in his life. She understood where he was coming from and why he was hell bent on destroying his family's ranch, but she was also determined to help him understand what is was going to take for him to no longer be chased by those demons. Sparks fly between these two..whether it's their verbal jabs at each other or the dirty talk they use when they're in bed....these two are HAWT. And the dirty talk is D-I-R-T-Y!

The death of the Cavanaugh brothers' sister will most likely play out throughout the series. We get snippets of her diary throughout Mac and Deacon's story. It's this diary that is key to what happened to Cass and I have a feeling it will be key in each brother's story as we get closer to finding out what really happened to her.

I liked the start to the series. I'm hoping James' story is next and that we discover behind that very quiet facade is another dirty Cavanaugh brother. If you enjoy Laura Wright's books, this is definitely one to pick up.

Sheri's Thoughts

River Black, Texas and the Triple C Ranch are both places that I would love to visit after seeing it through Mackenzie ‘Mac’ Byrd’s eyes. She’s a great heroine and I loved how rough and tumble she was but still capable of being a very feminine woman. I loved that she had such a big crush on Deacon Cavanaugh growing up, and that the crush grew up right with her. Mac and Deacon together despite his grumpiness, which he has every right to, are a great couple.

My only issue with this story was the way the author hopped from character perspectives, I loved being able to connect with what other characters and Cavanaugh brothers were thinking, but the hopping happened choppily. I’m hoping that’s something that will be fixed in the final copy, because as it stands that detracts from the story and makes it a bit muddled.

I look forward to each of the Cavanaugh brothers’ stories, because I know that they each have their own journey and demons to put to rest, and I really look forward to meeting the women who will tame them.

Ms. Wright does a fabulous job creating a rich world for these cowboys and men to live, and gives them a rich, if painful past, and I definitely enjoyed it and recommend the story to fans of cowboy and western romances.

Branded

After the death of their father, Deacon Cavanaugh and his brothers return home to the Triple C ranch with one goal - to destroy the ranch and their father's legacy. But Deacon's determination is tested when the ranch foreman, Mackenzie Byrd, challenges him at every turn, and soon he will have to choose between his obsession for revenge and a future with the woman he cannot live without.

While Deacon and Mac have strong chemistry, their backstory is underdeveloped, and their romance has little going for it other than insta-lust. Aside from mentioning Mac's girlish crush and Deacon's annoyance at her friendship with his sister, Cass, there are few details of their past acquaintance. Moreover, the transition of their relationship from opponents to soulmates is sudden and unrealistic, as is Deacon's decision with regard to the ranch at the end.

That said, the rest of the plot elements are much more intriguing. In addition to the kernels of a murder mystery, there are also snippets focusing on the lives of Deacon's brothers, all of whom have problems and secrets of their own. It will be interesting to see where the author takes these characters.

In sum, despite the shortcomings of the romance, Branded is a well-written and entertaining read and the mystery has definite possibilities.

Yee Haw?

This was a definite change of pace for me. I don't recall ever reading this kind of genre before, but... I liked it!

Our hero, Deacon, is a great introduction to cowboys for newbies such as myself, because he's part city boy, part country boy, and conflicted as hell about it. The news of his father's death brings him back to his childhood home, a working ranch that he positively HATES, to face his past so he can, hopefully, put it behind him forever. By destroying it. But will tearing down a few old buildings really help? And why does he hate it so much? The reasons take a while to come out, and until then Deacon's behaviour seems excessive and hard to swallow. Eventually, though, I grew to love him (and his brothers!) and, let me tell you this little nugget: he makes a very enthusiastic bed partner! That's all I'm saying...

Mackenzie Byrd was the childhood friend of Deacon's sister who had an annoying crush on him as teenagers. Now she's all grown up and determined to save the thing he hates most - The Triple C Ranch. I found Mackenzie to be smart, capable, and with the same mix of personalities problem as Deacon, except she's part tomboy, part girlie-girl. Which was an endearing mix. And although they wanted very different things, I was happy to see they went about their little war without resorting to any nasty underhanded tactics. Much.

All in all, this was a superb read. Prepare yourself for some seriously sensual scenes, some ridiculously hot brothers, and some sweet family moments in Branded. The warm fuzzies were a-happening all over the show with this one, and I can't wait to dive back into this world with the next instalment. I wonder which brother it will be!

For he most part this was an enjoyable read. I didn’t hate nor love it.

The sex scenes were definitely not my favourite. In fact they made me cringe at times but that was a totally personal thing for me - I found his ‘dirty talk’ very off putting.

I liked the diary thing but disliked that it wasn’t concluded in this book. I get it’s to get you to read on but really I’m just annoyed lol.

Didn’t like that he was still demonised at the end for wanting to destroy a place of trauma for him. And her turning her back to let him to what he wanted was a little shit. It’s not like she’s moving to the next farm over or something she’s leaving completely and had it planned out for straight away. I get why she was mad, but I don’t accept how she dealt with all this.

I also didn’t like how we saw other brothers POV’s. Understandable to get the info in the end, but until the end I was always like ugh go away I don’t care about this assistant or a brother doing mundane things.

I will say it was easy to read. A quick one day read for me and it kept me reading which has been an issue for me lately. Unsure if I’ll continue, but I’ll be spoiling it for myself in a second anyway because I’m nosey and I need answers for the sister lol

Thanks to netgalley for a free read in exchange for a review. I had a real good time reading this, although I thought Deacon got off pretty easy for his treatment of Mac. His turn around from asshole to infatuated was abrupt but I still enjoyed the plot and storyline. I look forward to book two and I would definitely read from this author again. Overall entertainment was four stars.

Not a bad read, and definitely a quick one.

Despite a male protagonist that I did not like at all (frankly, kind of an irredeemable asshole) and some fantastically awkward, cringe-worthy smut talk, I like some of the secondary characters (cough, cough Blue and James) enough to keep reading.
