I genuinely don’t think this was the feminism book for me. It was a mixture of introductory information on social justice topics and quotes from Gloria Steinem and others who she admires.

The book often winked at intersectional feminism but never really went there in part because of the formatting of a quote book but it also seemed at least with what we were given that there was a lack of understanding of feminism beyond the gender binary and though found families and friendships were mentioned as well there was mostly only discussion of romantic relationships between men and women. Additionally, there are a few quotes that especially without context seem to be very “not all men”. Not to mention the disparaging quotes around sex work and sex workers.

I’d say this could be valuable as a starting point for those very new to feminism but there are lots more resources which delve deeper into all feminism can be instead of this more formulaic look at feminism and the issues within and outside of the movement.

An absolute bible of quotes that all women should keep in their own personal 'feel good fuck the patriarchy' bible. Literally a book that I will pick up on a low day, flip to a random page and find something to put the fire into my belly again.

“In a way, passing on a quote is like putting a note in a bottle and sending out to sea. You may never know who will find your words – or who said or wrote the words you may find – but each quote is an entry in the diary of humankind. Without such words, that diary would be incomplete.“

This was such a beautiful book comprised of some really powerful quotes that capture so many important messages we need to hear today. It reads as more of a coffee table pick-me-up rather than a deep analysis of individual themes however I felt that really added to its charm. I loved the emphasis Steinem put on quotes needing to be accessible, easily distributable and free to evolve for whoever needs to hear them; how words can carry movements, unite the masses and provide foundational undertones to our loudest battlecries.

I read this in bursts, picking it up for a couple of sections and allowing myself to sit with some of the quotes that resonated. I’d recommend this way of digesting its mammoth takes, but also I’d revisit any chapter where you need specific advice or simply want to benefit from Steinem and her collaborators’ inviting pep talks.

In summary, the book acts as a guiding hand pulling out our chair at the collective sharing circle, leaving us with a plea to share our story next.

This is a great collection of quotes because Gloria Steinem herself is giving context for every chapter of the book.
