A gritty and determined collection of stories exploring the experiences of women today. Powerful and harrowing at times, this anthology captures eloquently the ongoing struggle that women face but still remains uplifting and empowering. The overwhelming feeling is one of triumph. Women can, and do, overcome the challenges thrown at them in life. My favourites are Vientiane and Operation M, as they spoke to me personally.

(RE)Sisters: Stories of Rebel Girls, Revolution, Empowerment and Escape is a "love letter to girlhood in all its gore and glory", a collection of short stories put together by For Books' Sake, an excellent organisation dedicated to championing writing by women (and behind the Write Like A Grrrl writing course that I constantly harp on about!).
They put out a call for YA fiction, and the anthology delivers a broad range of genres and characters, but it all reads well one after the other as a cohesive collection. It's difficult to pick a few for specific review as this is so wide-ranging, so different in its subject matter, that to pick one over the other is giving me a bit of a headache. Each story has its own little journey of dark and light, no lead is an archetype of one trait, and it's such a diverse set of stories, in every sense of the word.
What I will say, though, is that (RE)Sisters is empowering, from the world-changing views to those shifting within the individual, these are all excellent females and their rebellion against what's expected of them in life, being walked over, abused, left behind, left without choice. It's women claiming their own lives and destinies, with even the darkest of elements laid out on the page for all to see.
