really really enjoyed it (I just can’t stand reading about Gollum), some of my favorites characters appeared in this book and the ones who were already there had some strong character development (I’m looking at you Sam!!!)

My favorite escapist series. The plot is always interesting, and Tolkien is so good at world building that the book totally immerses you.

Apparently I never logged this book when I read it last year but I remember that it felt like a huge step down from the first book, probably because this book felt like a flood of exposition more than anything else. Still enjoyable but it’s clearly meant only as a bridge between the first book and the next and doesn’t hold up on its own in my opinion.
