As someone who’s never read a Stephen King novel before this book, I’d be lying if I said I didn’t have high expectations. I was drawn to both the plot and the simple fact that it’s written by such a prominent author. The many positive reviews I read about it also added to my desire to read this book. However, I found it pretty disappointing. The writing itself was excellent, but the book was drawn out extensively. I was hoping to read about a criminal mastermind and though Billy definitely had his moments of genius, I found him more than a little mundane. If you’re looking for a book about a tortured man trying to make the best of the horrible lot life has given him, then you’ll probably enjoy this book. But when it comes to action, violence, and assassinations, expect a level akin to a downgrade oceans eleven movie. Again, I’d never read Stephen King before now so take my review with that in mind, but this is not a book I’ll be rereading.
