A fun ghosty romance. The writing lost me a few times but the reader was very good for this audiobook.
No matter how many times I pick up the book, in any form, I just can't get into it.

Starling was able to take common tropes and plot points of dark academia and make them her own. But the 'twist' sort of made the intriguing mystery she had set up fall apart resulting in a dissatisfying ending.
I am still very conflicted on how I feel about this book as most of the story was intriguing and had a truly spooky atmosphere. I was invested in Jane's well-being and was equally interested in the mysteries she was trying to uncover. If the book had stuck the landing, I would have rated it anywhere from a 4 to 4.5. But as it stands, it is a 3.5-3.75 for me.
Knowing at least a good portion of my complaints are due to personal taste, I would still recommend this book to anyone who enjoys dark academia with supernatural elements (if you don't mind some level of medical gore & mentions of outdated medical practices).

Graphic: Medical content
Moderate: Death, Blood
Minor: Gaslighting
Multiple mentions of blood-letting. Surgery scenes (though not in extreme detail). Forced anesthesia and medical treatment.
Gaslighting mentioned above was very minor and if I remember correctly was unsuccessful.
I really enjoyed the premise but the way it went off the rails didn't work for me in the way I hoped. I could imagine going back to this one later and liking it more.
Pacing is exceptional but I found the characters shallow and unconvincing and the prose mediocre.

rating this one is kinda hard…i was really gripped for the first 75%, but once it got around chapter 30 with the magic stuff coming into play it kind of lost me. i guess i was hoping for something a little more sinister, which isn’t really against the book itself it’s just not that kind of story.
Graphic: Body horror, Gore, Medical content, Injury/Injury detail
Moderate: War
Minor: Miscarriage
