I liked this book and then it kind of totally stopped making sense which was unfortunate. i still really enjoy caitlin starling's writing style and will read more books! I just feel like i didn't really understand what she was trying to do here or say

I’m conflicted over this book. There were some really good aspects: descriptions of gothic setting, some creepy scenes. The black magic aspect was interesting. I had a few issues with this book. Firstly, the relationship between the two main characters was not very believable, and I did not feel invested in them. While her writing is colorful, at times it just dragged and, at other times, went in circles. The metaphysical part of the explanation of events became so convoluted, I lost interest. This is especially frustrating when you’re at 85% of the book. Overall, I think a good concept suffered from execution issues.

Wow this was a rollarcoaster of a book but not in a good way. The premise hooked me and I thought that it would be a perfect read for the spooky season. It started out so strong and I was hooked. Jane proposes marriages to the mysterious Mr. Lawrence who she thinks will be a good match for her. She will be able to be independent, while being secure in a marriage to a man. At first he is uncertain but when he realizes it will be a business arrangement he changes his tune. His one caveat is that they keep separate residences and she never come to his family estate. Jane agrees and they soon marry. Naturally things happen and Jane is unable to keep her side of the bargain. Up until this point in the book I was loving it, it was when the explanation of what was really going on was revealed that it was I was lost. There is a two or three layer reason and if the other had just stayed with the first it would have been a great book. I was not on board for the other reasons. I do not understand why that even needed to be in the book. My other issue was that it quickly became instalove. Not for me and an overall disappointment. A weak 2 stars.

This book is startlingly haunting! The twists and turns devoured hours of my time as I read it cover to cover in less than a day. I think the second half dragged on a bit which is the only reason is it not a five star read. Otherwise, I enjoyed this psychological thriller and will be thinking on it for years to come
