A gothic haunted house story about unlikely newlyweds, with medical gore, ghosts, and magic? Sign me up. I really liked this one - the characters were interesting, the plot was unique to most haunted house stories I've read, the gothic themes were spot on. This book was dark, bloody, full of grief and madness, and yet somehow lovely and a testament to how far we'll go for love.
Ya, I’m going to go ahead and dnf this one. If you’ve seen Crimson Peak, you’ve basically read this book (it’s like fraternal twins—related, but not exactly the same). And Jane (who is introduced as a strong, independent woman that is choosing to marry as a business venture instead of for any romantic reasons) immediately devolves into a dependent, swoony character that clings to the man she married like he’s the air she needs to breathe. I just… I don’t know how this ends, obviously, because I haven’t finished it; but there is not any kind of ending I can foresee that would make me care enough to finish.

I found Jane infuriating. She upset at her husband and that he lied and all sorts of stuff. But their marriage is business, it's not love but she acts like it should be. I'm not saying if he was good or bad, but that she violated his one requirement. Then acted all put out over it.

I was very into this one at first, but she lost me about halfway through. The ending was just too weird and too confusing and I just did not care anymore.

While it was an interesting concept, this book spent almost all of its time telling, not showing. It felt like we were being spoon fed the plot points and the reasons they were significant rather than letting the action speak for itself. I liked the world building but it was overshadowed by the above issues and sometime felt like an attempt to make a real world connection with little effort. The explanation of the “magic” systém was interesting but by the time it was provided I no longer had any interest in the fates of the characters. And I never understood the protagonist’s motivations, despite it being spoonfed to the reader, it did not come across in her actions.
