The gothic atmosphere in The Death of Jane Lawrence was done quite well and I really enjoyed how all the characters had a bit of 'unreliableness' to them which had me questioning everyone. Unfortunately, I felt like there was something missing in the ending - this is definitely not a book for those that don't like an open-ended conclusion.
Personally, I felt like the ending leant itself toAugustine actually dying within Lindridge Hall, whether by accident via Jane or if the cellar really did collapse on him, and that Dr. Nizamiev has Jane under her care at the asylum with Jane imagining Augustine being safe with her.
However, based on an interview that I found with the author, it doesn't seem to be the case and the ending is pretty cut and dry.

When I read the synopsis of this book, I thought maybe ghosts or werewolves? But it took a turn I wasn't quite expecting honestly. Weak willed man with a shadowy past and a young determined logical woman was a combo I thought would be a bit more humorous, but really just ended up a tiny bit sad and lonely. I did like the ending of the book because it's left me wondering how truly reliable our narrator was this entire time.
I woke up at 2 am and decided to finish this book. Unsurprisingly, I promptly started jumping at every sound. My cat wasn’t helping matters — she continually tried to open cupboard doors and chased invisible things through my room.

Nice Victorian slow burn with a strange attraction element. Think Wuthering Heights with Shelley’s monster wreaking havoc and you’re in the right neighborhood. Ghosts and reanimation attempts and so much blood make this a nice macabre read.

Meh. The plot had potential but the pacing was off so it was kind of boring at times.
