It got a little confusing at the end. I listened to the audio, so that may be why I didn't follow it so well.

The ending of this book was... trying so hard to be cosmic that it lost a lot of the charm that made it decent in the beginning. This book tried to be too many things all at once, which made it clunky and awkward and dense to get through.
The ending was confusing as hell. I like a book that is purposefully confusing, but this was not that. This just sort of felt like the author had a secret and was intentionally making sure we would never understand the secret.
Once again, dark themes are discussed here and maybe check triggers if you don't like blood, body horror, drug abuse, or toxic maybe men/maybe spirits

I did not like this book. The beginning was interesting, but it quickly became tedious. The narrator starts seeing ghosts all over the place, then she says ghosts don’t exist while still seeing ghosts, so, were they ghosts? I’m so confused. Jane is pretty insufferable. She marries a man she barely knows. They agree their union is strictly a business arrangement, then they both catch feelings. Unfortunately for Jane, her new hubby has a ton of secrets. Instead of respecting this and getting to know one another, Jane forces herself into his life and business and is SHOCKED it turns out poorly. Jane also starts shooting up cocaine at one point in the book, which I didn’t see coming. So that was a turn.

Eh. I really did like the beginning, but it lost me once the friends came to visit and the book transformed over into a black magic sort of tale, and my interest just never came back again.
It even had a load bearing villain and a collapsing house, and I still never felt like I was engaged. I don't think Jane was strong enough to carry the entire book on her shoulders. It was sort of like a more gothicky, less academic and somehow even less clear, version of Vita Nostra, and that's a fever dream I didn't really need to relive.
Just. Meh, all around. I like the opening quite a lot, and the atmosphere is good, but the second half leaps over a shark and I just sort of. Lost all motivation for it. Nice audiobook reader, though.

It certainly could be worse, but there were a number of issues. Biggest by far was the character of Jane. She tells us repeatedly how logical, not emotional and ‘different’ she is from other women, but her actions display the complete opposite. At one point in the book, she tells another character how ‘she isn’t the sort to cry’ about the situation she is in. Not two pages later, she starts sobbing about her situation. It became extremely annoying very quickly. Other issues include the overall plot, which needed more explanation, and the relationship to Augustine (reminder that this books takes place in the period of less than a month).
I’m disappointed, as this book had a promising beginning. Cool cover though.

The last five chapters were not necessary. This story started out good, but then the story plot was really lost. And the dnd was sort of like "Dallas: death of Bobby Ewing"
