I loved The Luminous Dead so I was hoping that Starling's next book would be as good but I found it mostly dull and repetitive. There's some intrigue occasionally and like a solid 50 pages I thought were really good, but overall, I found it lacking.

Two stars because at least the writing is pretty.

At first I was impressed because Jane semed like a woman who was going to do exactly what she wanted for herself, and her future. Arranged marriage of her own choice, laying out the details, making it clear what her expectations were, it was like a dream! I thought it was very, very cool, welcome, and warm set up for a slow burn between two people who shouldn't but will. But what happens five seconds in? She folds, immediately in love with him and constantly talking about her ache ugh her need oooh her burning desire for him.

And then!!!! The entire book became her fixing all his hang ups with some remote and offhanded effort of fixing hers. It's like the author realized this and tried to hamfist some equality in "if he's saved, so am I."

I genuinely wish he would've been a shit manipulator, and not some frail and excusable man for all of the awful decisions he'd made. He had 0 consequences and 100% reward.

The plot happened to Jane, Jane did nothing to move it forward, so even her agency as a character was squandered.

It was wack and it was too long and I don't like books that try to pull one over on you but give you no foreshadowing whatsoever........ boooooo.
