Jane is a rational, business-minded protagonist. She then seems to completely lose her mind over a marriage that had maybe two or three good days. It would have been romantic in a gothic way—the writing is good, tense, and gloomy—if her utter devotion made sense. I spent most of the novel wishing that she would just save herself and throw the whole man out.

Super gothic, heavy on the medical elements. The last half of the book didn’t really engage me as much, I was confused, but also a touch bored with the plotting, which was slower at this point. Had some Jane Eyre/Mr. Rochester elements, and I’ve come out feeling confused but satisfied.

The ending was delightfully predictable, only because of how faithful this book is to the gothic horror genre. Caitlin Starling simply Gets It, and I love her for it.
