I probably keep repeating myself endlessly, but I don't mind: Harlan Coben is without a doubt one of my favourite authors (along with Jo Nesbo, Håkan Nesser, Michael Robotham, Paul Auster…) and none of his books have ever disappointed me. While I do favour the Myron Bolitar series over the series featuring Mickey Bolitar, all of his books share splendid, unpredictable plots; lots of humor and well developed characters.
"Fool me once" is the most recent book written by Harlan Coben and boy does it live up to my expectations. Started reading it yesterday, finished it today, just couldn't put it down. It is a stand-alone book, not related to either of the Bolitar series, but it does contain all the elements I so love in Coben's work.
In "Fool me once", we meet Maya, who witnessed her husband being murdered only months after her sister was murdered as well. But then, as she checks the tapes of the nanny cam, she suddenly sees her presumably dead husband appear on the tapes. Maya, an ex-soldier, is determined to find out the truth behind her husband's death and very quickly becomes entangled in a much larger and complicated intrigue going way back in time….. Suspense until the end!

(Detective Sami Kierce #1)
Fool Me Once by Harlan Coben
Because I have the NetGalley ARC ebook for Nobody's Fool by Harlan Coben coming up and it says it's #2 in the Detective Sami Kierce series, I thought I'd read the first book in the series. I'm very fuzzy on how these books are connected though so I'll just have to wait until I read the second book. I did enjoy the first one all on it's own and now can say I've read a Harlan Coben book and look forward to reading more.
We meet former special ops pilot Maya and her life is a tragic mess. She has a huge disaster in her past that torpedoed her career, for good reason, her sister was murdered not all that long ago, and her husband was murdered in front of her two weeks ago. She's raising a toddler on her own now and she's suffering from PTSD and/or other disorders.
Now there has been a strange intrusion into her privacy and her home...or is she hallucinating? Whatever, Maya is determined to track down who murdered her sister and husband and she has very few inner inhibitions holding her back. She's been to war, she's a weapons expert, she's going to get this job done, one way or another.
Yes, Maya is a lit fuse in more ways than one. Yet there is a little girl who needs to be cared for, there are people who will stop Maya because they have reputations to protect, and there are people who are rightly worried about Maya. This was one of those stories I didn't want to put down and why I know I'd be reading more of this author even if I didn't already have one of his books in hand.
Thanks to my library and Libby for this ebook.

I enjoy Harlan Coben, and have read lots of his books, but this one was just OK. The problems start at the very beginning with a main character who seems less like an actual character and more like a cipher. I finished the book yesterday and couldn't even remember her name. I thought it was something with an "L", but no, that's her daughter, who also fails to behave like any child I've ever met and more like a Baby Alive. Except you have to change a Baby Alive's diaper now and then, but miraculously this one never got in the way of the steamroller of a plot.
And what a plot! Is the husband dead? Is he alive? Is she crazed with PTSD? What happened on that helicopter? Is this the lamest take on WikiLeaks ever? Where the hell is this giant compound for the Burkett family so close to NYC? There was a lot of eyerolling on my part. The blistering pace of the gigantic, multi lined plot didn't leave a lot of room to paint the details in the characters, and the story suffered for it.
I'm glad I read it - it was a nice enough diversion for a few hours, and like I said, I usually enjoy Coben's work. Unfortunately, this just isn't some of his best work. 2.5 stars.

This is the first Harlan Coben book I've ever read and I loved it. It was a slow start and I wasn't really into it in the beginning, but as soon as things picked up and I could not put this book down. In this one we follow Maya, who was in the army, as she tries to figure out the murder of her sister and her husband. She basically goes on this one woman mission, investigating, following leads and talking to people all by herself, with the occasional help of her best friend Shane, who was also in the army.
Her husband comes from a very rich, well known family. The type of family that holds a lot of secrets. Maya starts to uncover some of those secrets and the story unravels from there. I loved this book. I loved how the author reveals just the right amount of information as big events unfolds, I loved how this kept me on my toes and I loved the plot twist. It took me completely by surprise and that doesn't happen often. I would highly recommend this and I will definitely read more of Coben's books.

Very good story. The right person died. So sad in the end. Mia should have lived. This book made me cry.
I like mysteries that keep me guessing right until the end. This one did. I kept changing my choice for "who dunit" right up to when it's all revealed.
This is the 2nd or 3rd book I've read by this author. They've been good enough for me to seek out his other books.
Definitely recommend.
