This book is for white men. It was vaguely misogynistic and the narrator is unlikeable. Stopped at the point when two white police officers decided not to record a full witness statement from someone who’s just committed an assault because “someone might try and claim it was a racially motivated crime”. This was because what she said indicated that it was probably a racially motivated crime. Suggestion was this was just good common sense. Main character is creepy to his female coworker, thinks about sleeping with her constantly and gets an erection while hugging her after witnessing a traumatic family annihilation. She is “polite enough not to mention it”. This book was recommended to me by two white male friends. 0 stars just don’t.

23/02/23:

It was a fun and okay read. Like not particularly exciting but also not particularly boring. The MC's musing and observations were fun to follow, like comments about bureaucracy. I didn't enjoy the male gaze parts though. Its not at the level of Dresden files but still there, which not going to lie, made me really uncomfortable. Not to say there weren't varied personalities of female character. The MC is just horny and makes it really really obvious. If I could reach inside the book and smack his head I would rate the book much higher. (jk)

Final rating: 3.5/5

I really wanted to like this book more than I did.

From what I know of this author, he’s a white liberal who is trying to write non-white characters and bring that to his (mostly white) audience, which can have value. However, sentences like the following, not followed by some addressing of the larger issue, are damaging and problematic and this is going to be a DNF book and series for me

“I suddenly had a horrible thought. What if they were thinking of sending me to Trident? That was the operational command unit charged with tackling gun crime within the Black community. Trident was always on the lookout for Black officers to do hideously dangerous undercover work, and being mixed race meant that I qualified. It’s not that I don’t think they do a worthwhile job, it’s just that I didn’t think I’d be very good at it.”
