A reread for bookclub this month, and every bit as good as the first time. I love the mix of humour and history.

Sorta liked the concept but it felt like a mishmash of things I’ve already read and loved like Neil Gaiman and Harry Potter ... didn’t love the writing didn’t love the characters ... a solid ‘meh’

DNF @25% I really liked it to premise and was intrigued, but I couldn’t get past the moment the guy wanted to motorboat the hot woman he just met; it was weird.

That isn’t what made me stop. I just got a bit bored by alllllll the extraneous details. I know how a movie theater works. You don’t have to describe how you get tickets and seats in that level of detail!

The first book in the Rivers of London series, and very much like a 21st century Neverwhere. Peter Grant is a rookie police officer and a new apprentice wizard, who has to sort out a sudden rash of murders and face-meltings. He interacts with vampires and personified rivers and actors in order to do so. What sets this book apart is not just the inventiveness but the attention to detail. Very fun reading, and I will certainly take in the rest of the series.

Quite a nice surprise for a book with such a quiet, mundane (for an urban fantasy) beginning. I'm looking forward to the next book.
