This book was a step up from the previous one, but not a very big one. It's hard for me to rate these books because the bones of the story are amazing and could make a series I would totally fall in love with, but there are several things that I just keep missing. I think it's one of those books I'm gonna look back on fondly and wonder why I haven't rated them higher, because the good things are gonna stick with me and the bad things which have mainly to do with the reading experience I'm gonna forget.
I adore Jaren, he is the perfect book boyfriend, I think he could use some character flaw in the third book just so it's not too good to be true, but he is so patient with Kiva and boy, does she need that. I really like her character as well, it's for sure a refreshing one, I love how the author managed to make her guarded to the people in the story, while not being guarded with the reader since it's written in first person. The side characters are mostly great too (Caldon especially, I adore him). I'm also really enjoying how is this series political.
Now to the things I'm missing... I probably shouldn't fault a book for it's YA aspects when it's supposed to be YA but I just can't help myself. The whole middle is just one big moral dilemma which I guess should have been daunting for me were I a younger reader, but like this I knew from the start which way it's gonna go and I just wanted to get on with the story, but we were stuck in a loop until the very end. Another thing is that while some relationship developments between characters were perfectly paced so that it's believable, few were also quite rushed. And the ending is unfortunately very predictable.
I am still curious about the last book, but I can see myself recommending this series to certain people, I'm having quite a good time.

Oh my god this woman is so fricking stupid!!!! I got so annoyed with how easily she believes everyone around her. Aaaaghh so frustrating to listen to. Also I thought this was a duology so it was unexpected that the ending led to another book.

Lynette Noni heeft een toegankelijke schrijfstijl, zonder ingewikkelde zinnen, waardoor de lezer direct in het verhaal zit. Politieke intriges, gevechten en geheimen worden prettig afgewisseld met rustigere stukken waarin emoties en relaties centraal staan.
De stad Vallenia wordt zo beeldend omschreven dat het voelt alsof de lezer zich in een sprookjeswereld met een duister randje bevindt. Ook de groei van Kiva komt duidelijk naar voren; ze is een gelaagder personage geworden. In dit tweede deel staat haar innerlijke strijd centraal: aan wie moet ze loyaal zijn en welke keuzes durft ze te maken? Dit zorgt voor een meeslepend en psychologisch geladen verhaal.
De romantiek tussen Jaren en Kiva krijgt meer ruimte, maar blijft mooi in balans met de hoofdplot. Een aantal bijpersonages, zoals Tipp en Naari, blijven vooral ondersteunend, maar dragen wel bij aan de sfeer en dynamiek van het verhaal. Het sterke slot zorgt ervoor dat de lezer reikhalzend uitkijkt naar het vervolg.
