Despite reading other reviews, I found My Annihilation to be an extremely interesting written noir. I enjoyed how everything came together as you got further into the book and picked up on earlier themes which help you realize the different perspectives and how perverse the main character is. You get a semi-deep dive into a person psychology and they try to psychoanalysis themselves, and have you as the reader, rethinking everything you have just read, but you soon realize that is the whole point.

I’ll probably put more later but this was a super interesting read, and it for sure got you asking questions about what makes one’s self, but tbh I could just be a lil too dumb for it because I felt very lost at points where I could tell I was having things explained/should have been more clear

i was really engaged the entire time while reading this book, but i'll be honest,,, i also really was confused during it,,,,, even when it was clear that some things were being explained for me. i'm happy to read books that do not have everything explained to you--whether that be in the conclusion of the story or throughout, severance by ling ma being an example of this and one of my all time faves--but either i was not quite smart enough for this book (LOL, but seriously) or it's just a personal thing for the stylistic choices in storytelling and narration.

i will say,,, the other thing i didn't love is that this felt really close to a book that just relies on gaslighting for the twist, and while this definitely wasn't quite that,,, i think with the added points from above I would land this at a 3/5 personally

you know when you're writing an essay last minute so you're winging it without much of a central arguement point but in your post pocrastination delirium you think every minute connection sounds smart. however each passing paragraph becomes a game of telephone with different texts from class you've worked in obscurifying the original assignment prompt. these very texts you scramble to in order to plea to the overworked ta grading that yes you did do the readings and have something so profound to say become all the more proof there was no connection past cursorary glances.

according to mayoclinic, delirium is a serious change in mental abilities. it results in confused thinking and

This was such an intensly weird experience.
It was really confusing for the first third, but I actually enjoyed the mystery and speculation. I think the reveal itself was good, but the way it was done felt underwhelming.
I saw a review calling it a tilt-a-whirl manned by a lazy sadist, and there's definitely truth in that.
I don't mind the detached writing style, it fit well with the themes of the book, but I definitely think that this book could benefit from a more "traditionally" structure narrative, with some in-depth character exploration.
However I'm really intrigued by the author and surely will read more of their books in the future.
