Everyone in this book is a creep. I can’t do another creepfest so soon after Kuckuckskind (which was at least funny tbh).

Dropped at 15%. Until that point, we meet 4 major-ish characters:

  • Ida who apparently has a fetish about dating guys with self-esteem issues. She finds a shy, introverted dude, starts to forcefully chat him up and then just never leaves (until the dude dumps her out of desperation, like her last ex did. He felt like ‘he was holding her back’, quote unquote.)

  • Carl who used to have a Severus Snape-type of relationship with Ida’s mom and now that Ida’s mom is dead and Ida all grown up (she’s 20, Carl is almost 50 and she calls him uncle), he gets all horny about her. It’s almost like Lolita at this point but without the literary merits.

  • Midas (allusion bit on the nose but ok) who is Ida’s newest victim. He is nerdy and very much into photography, people-shy, used to be bullied in school, has literally 1 friend (the same one since kindergarten), the normal package. His interest in Ida gives me somewhat serial killer vibes (Joe from You, anyone?) but it might be just me.

  • Henry Fuwa. Another oldish dude who seems to be into Midas’ mom for a change (thankfully she’s still alive so he doesn’t get all creepy around Midas at least). Also he’s a loner and has some sort of a shack in the middle of nowhere where he keeps prisoner tiny winged bulls who might be some sort of insect or they might be fairies, but whatever they are, they are desperately trying to escape.

To be fair, though, I was given a warning when one of the characters called the islands where the story is set, ‘incestuous’. Should’ve run for the hills at that point.
