Survival is ugly. Healing is messy. Self-love is compliment. It is your hardest days as much as your best days that help you grow. All of this is part of being human.

oh, wow.

What I like
1. A Stories About Goddess
Cerita favoritku tentang Drupadi.

2. Character Develompment and Plot

Gil’s most recent volume of poetry and stories fell flat: I expected a growth in her work, a new perspective, a more specific microcosm of feminism. I find it hard to review poetry based on a persons experiences, but good poetry takes those experiences and uses them to do something. Gil’s first two volumes of feminist interpretations of fairytales and subsequently Greek mythology were a fresh and welcome alternative to the patriarchal and masculine originals. However, her subject for this volume—a girl from Kashmiri who struggles with the trauma and tragedy of partition, sexual abuse, and her sexual identity—was not adequately and justly represented. The lack of growth in Gil’s writing unfairly relegated Paro, her protagonist, one more feminist character in Gil’s oeuvre. I am disappointed because I feel that Gil has potential, but rather than focus on honing her craft and expanding the possibilities of her writing, she recycled the same characters, themes, and ideas in every volume. Other than the story, her newest collection seems prescriptive and repetitive. I truly enjoyed her “Fierce Fairytales” and “Gods and Goddesses,” but I expected more from a third book: she is a great feminist and storyteller, but as far as this volume is concerned, not a great writer.
