This book will definitely be a hard read if you been through what Roan has been through. And unfortunately, I could relate to her in a lot of ways.  So before anyone read this, more sure you read the trigger warnings from others reviews.

Holy shit. It was dark and unsettling and UNPUTDOWNABLE. I devoured it. I felt disgusted while reading parts of this book, but I feel that was the point, this book is made to make you feel uncomfortable. The abusive coach/athlete relationship is magnified by the pair being father/daughter.
Mihalic's writing is flawless. The tension was perfect, it had my heart pounding. From the arena to their home, the atmosphere was haunting, The characterizations felt so real, I truly cared for Roan. This book was incredible, I highly recommend it, but also warn of the dark and graphic subject matter.
CW: sexual abuse, rape, emotional abuse, incest.

This book had some pretty intense subject matter, a girl's incestuous relationship with her abusive and controlling father. May be triggering for some. It was dealt with sensitively, but in my opinion it read like Sweet Valley High and the Incest-y Prom. The author tried to throw a couple of curse words around and seem worldly, but it was teenage POV. That may have been purposeful, but I don't read YA because I don't like that. I have been a YA and now I am a GA (grown ass woman.) If you like YA you may enjoy. Three and a half, because difficult subject, and I'm glad somebody wrote about it.

I’m not really sure how to feel or write my thoughts about this book. I enjoyed the equestrian setting (having spent many of my years around horses), but if you’re thinking about starting this one, you must be aware that it involves very graphic and disturbing depictions of incest and pedophilia. While I understand what the writer was trying to do, I found the sexual violence too much, too explicit and too gratuitous. If you struggle reading about things like sexual assault/violence, put yourself first and skip this one.

This is not a lighthearted read. Despite the subject matter, I loved this book. I experienced a lot of anger and sympathy while reading it. I hated Roan's dad and hoped he would get what was coming to him. I really felt for Roan and the decisions she had to make. Her home life was so horrible, yet she chose to overcome. Some parts of this book were so hard to read and had me sobbing, but at it's heart, is a beautiful story. I didn't know if I would enjoy the horse part, but it was written in a way that I understood what was happening and was able to still connect to the story.

I would recommend this to those who like books such as My Absolute Darling.

I received this book in exchange for a review. I was not able to finish the book due to the content. I have read many child abuse books but the power her father had over her mentally and sexually was just too much for me. I felt like I knew where the story was going (I got half way through) and I did not want to finish that ride.
