the wire if it was british. choosing to expand the world beyond merely the pure politics but the social realities, of how a life of crime can feel inescapable in a situation like this...this series is on top form. extremely powerful stuff

A recycled plot line with a twist. I did enjoy reading about the world from a smaller perspective which made it more realistic and engaging. With that being said at this point I’m rather bored with the whole series and the characters development or composition aren’t interesting.

The only reason I'm giving this book four stars is because it's not what I was expecting or what I wanted.
I desperately wanted this to be about Callum and Sephy but it wasn't :( Although Check Mate did answer a lot of questions and tied everything together. I wanted double cross to be about Callie Rose and Sephy's relationship.

I mean it's a good book. It just wasn't how I wanted things to end.

Tobey longs for a better life than he is born into, faced with a decision that could give him this, but goes against his moral fibre, in the fourth novel of the dystopian Noughts and Crosses world, Blackman continues exploring themes of racial prejudice, the impact it has on those living in it now and the future consequences.

It explores how upbringing, the environment you are brought up in, the love you are shown, can have significant consequences on the choices and actions you take. And as the series continues, it explores the impact that this has on the generations to come.

Whilst initially feeling a little lighter than the other novels in the series, and me worrying it was going down the route of a romance novel (which really is not my favourite genre) it quickly reassured me that it was far from that.

The lightness at the start meant for a much greater impact when the twists came and Blackman’s ability to weave a story shines through again.

This isn’t my favourite of the series but that doesn’t mean it isn’t utterly brilliant. Malorie Blackmans writing is exquisite and I cannot recommend the Noughts and Crosses Novels highly enough!

thoughts while reading

The Rise…
p44: the fact that tobey and callie still aren’t an item is a crime really
p88: one guess as to which race maxine is 🙄
p90: oh i hope not. if that dude is still alive after all this 😤
p93: everywhere. everywhere is the harm

The Fall…
p177: tobias durbridge. if you dare…
p181: if you’re that bloody scared of McAuley then you shouldn’t have ratted tobey out to him
p189: God, he’s gonna make tobey shoot dan
p191: don’t do it man, turn round and shoot the bosses (obv that’s actually a crap plan cause the rest of the mob will come after him, but i’m out of suggestions)
p220: that is a strange night, but i suspected she would do that
p239: that’s exactly what we thought, but how will they get him back? alive or in pieces?
p248: oh lordy, what if rebecca is dating the head of the L.M.? i’m pretty sure jude is dead, cause i rechecked Checkmate, but that thing is like a cockroach…
p264: sadly that’s the smartest plan actually, he’ll find out way more info from
rebecca than working at TFTM

p346: oh damn rebecca means serious business
p365: oh finally callie’s pov is back!
p373: thank god
p384: no tobey, please walk becks back to her car
p399:
