An engaging and entertaining follow-up that depicts Jude squarely in the midpoint of her quest for power: having attained a semblance of it but unable to wield it in her own right. No "second book slump" here. The only thing I can think to remark upon is that Lady Asha's character felt a bit underutilized, especially after she made such a striking introduction by revealing her connection to Jude's mother.

so after being confused with the cruel prince and a number of plot summaries, I found that understanding this book was a lot easier and I was actually able to associate with the story and characters. so that's GREAT

anyway I found that a good part of this book was hanging around the 3.5-3.75 area for me, BUT about 200 pages in  IT STARTED GETTING REALLY GOOD OK. the politics and scheming were fun and interesting to read about, bargaining with cardan, ykyk the good stuff.

a bunch of stuff along the lines of "I HATE LOCKEEE KILL HIM OMG", "damn cardans kinda hot", all the way to "WAOH WOAH WOAH WOAH WOAH WHAT IS HAPPENING HQBAFZNAZBGLAHF"

and then the ending happened. screaming. crying. throwing up. WHAT THE HECK THAT WAS THE LAST THIGN I COULD AHVE EVER EXPECTED. so I had to make a new shelf just for the sake of this book, accurately named screaming internally lmao

I...I just don't even know where to start.

Like this was a freakin roller coaster...and every time I thought I knew where loyalties lied...it would take another dive.

I'll process this more and maybe add on some stuff...but holy moly. I have no idea what to expect from the final book. I've never been more excited and anxious at the same time.

Wow. I wont lie, it took me a while to get into this book, although its not the books fault, its tiktoks for spoiling the end for me. I knew what was to happen and it made me not want to read on because i knew i wasnt going to like how it ended. I always knew
Tayrn was fishy, although I was sad about the Ghost's betrayl.
It definitely picked up half way through and Jude's badassness kept me reading.
4 stars as of just finishing

This book was good but it didn't catch me as much as The Cruel Prince did. The first half of the book was very slow and I was missing some action. But once I progressed a little more in the story there were so many twists and turns I wasn't sure what to think. I was on the edge of my seat and I loved every minute of it!
I absolutely loved the character development in this book. How can you not love Jude? She is one of the best main characters I have ever met in a book and she is so fierce and smart I just love her.
Some twists made me gasp out loud and the intrigues were endless in this book. What a ride (especially the end, like what?!)!
The atmosphere and overall mood of the book was so good. I never was that invested in a fantasy world but this series is everything.

tropes: enemigos a amantes, espías, y fantasía
