Given that BEACH READ was my first endeavor into the romance genre, I didn't even know what to expect, but I especially didn't know that I would come away with a renewed sense of love and family.

January Andrews is an idealist-turned-cynic after her life changed from something suited for the ending of a romance novel to that of a Faulkner epic: she's broke, newly single, and still reeling from the shock of finding out that her supposedly perfect family is not as perfect as she once thought. In fact, her dead dad left her the beach house where he harbored a secret lover. As a result, January has to clear out the house and write a book in three months. When she finds out that her new neighbor is Augustus "Gus" Everett, a college rival who writes beautiful if not nihilistic fiction, she doesn't expect to spend any time with him – much less make a bet that ties their futures together. Now, Gus has to write a romance novel with a happily ever after while January attempts to publish the next best American novel. With all the secrets each harbor, falling in love is the last thing on their minds. Even if it gets increasingly difficult to avoid.

BEACH READ is cute if not predictable, heartwrenching if not cloying. Yet, I found myself unable to put this book down. Sometimes, a feel-good happily-for-now slash happily-ever-after is just what you need. With realistic characters, family secrets, and suicide cults, BEACH READ is a solid read and a definite recommend.
