I did not expect the major plot twist but my friend sure heard my screaming when it happened.

Set in Burnie, Theresa/Tiger experiences the suicide of her best friend. She is determined to cope by staying busy, and the book shows her coming to an understanding of her loss. Heartbreaking but also delightful, with plenty of references to my favourite 90s pop songs, I found Tiger infinitely (and scarily) relatable.

Thanks to the publisher for sending me a copy of this book to review!

Girl Running, Boy Falling is a lovely Aussie YA about our main character Therese/Tiger/Resey/Champ struggling to regain her footing after someone incredibly close to her dies by suicide. It's a heartbreaking story about the realities of grief filled with some beautiful, poignant moments.

The highlights for me were the family dynamics presented. Tiger is raised by her aunt and Grandma as her parents are absent and the two are wonderful. Her aunt is a ray of sunshine, trying to support her in every way and made me love her so much. She was genuine and caring and very well-written. The other big pro was the way grief was represented a lot of the time (some things I couldn't relate to) as Tiger retreats into herself and withdraws from her friends and family. It was a very raw story at times.

It was also really refreshing to read an Aussie YA because I haven't for a while. This was more Aussie than I've read in a while which was fun!

I do have a few small things that held this book back for me. I think it was a little short and that meant the ending felt rushed, I don't think this offered enough closure for me which was a bit of a shame. I also wasn't a huge fan of how Tiger's best friend, who is a lesbian, was the stereotyped 'down with the patriarchy' character. But these aren't huge issues and I still quite liked the book, it had me tearing up at points and laughing at others.

„Es geht darum, dass nichts - vor allem das, was vollkommen und schön und magisch ist - für immer ist. Die meisten schönen Sachen existieren nur für kurze Zeit. Das macht sie so kostbar.
Nichts goldenes bleibt.“

Einfühlsam, emotional, wichtig - das sind drei der 100 Worte, die mir zuerst zu diesem Buch einfallen.
Ich muss es erstmal sacken lassen, aber lest dieses Buch ♥️

This is a very powerful book, but for personal reasons I'm not going to give an actual review.
