This is a weird little book.  It really is about women talking during a two-day meeting.  I found it strangely compelling, though.  I can't decide if I want to see the movie or not.

"There must be satisfaction gained in accurately naming the thing that torments you."

Semantics, vocabulary and the meaning of words are so important to these women and to this story. The women cannot write or read, yet invite a man, albeit one who is easily disregarded because of his status in the community, a rare exception to an extremely patriarchal environment, to record the minutes of their meetings. The meetings are necessary to determine what is to be done in the aftermath of violent attacks on the women and their children. This decision relies on philosophical analysis of the deeply rooted religious beliefs of the women. This is a beautiful story of the power of language, love, anger and pure hope, as these women seek a way through their oppressive environment, believing that they have the right to an essential tenet of humanity – the freedom to think.
