Basically a one-day read, after seeing the movie last weekend. There were things I thought the movie did better - I didn't need the Koop boys and am glad Sarah Polley excised them - but I loved learning more about August. I don't think I needed his inner life in the film (and I'm grateful for Autje's voiceover), but I'm glad I got it this way.

A really good book! It reminded me of The Karmazov Brothers except that it was significantly shorter and the conversations were more relevant and between women. It was just also harder to read because of the seriousness of the content.

TW: rape, sexual abuse, physical abuse 

This book was extremely difficult to read, not only because of the subject matter, or due to the fact that I have been a victim of rape and sexual abuse, but because of how it was written. 
I do think it is a story that needed to be told, that needs to be experienced. If you have been a victim, make sure you are in a decent headspace before reading this.

The novel is based on real events: a number of women and girls in a strict Mennonite colony were drugged and raped by night - by men within their community, as it turned out. The book provides an imagined response by the women. The central event is the women holding a private discussion in which they decide what to do.
