I did not actually finish it. It was too painful, and I wasn’t in the head space for it. It is one of the most profound books I have read and the existential dread to created for me was palpable. Massively important but strap on your big girl pants.

It's a complicated read/listen. However, there is a great deal of education to be found here.

 Selection Bias, anyone?

This book is well written by someone who is very learned and articulate; and also only seems able to talk about things that support the narrative he's trying to push. Or name-dropping all the famous people he's counseled. Or about the time he did ayahuasca in Mexico with a bunch of Medicos.

Reading this book is a lot like listening to the person in your psychology class try to impress everyone and just making themselves look like a jerk.

This took me so long to read only because I had to be locked in while I was reading it. I didn’t want to miss a thing Dr. Maté had to say in this book, because every sentence in every paragraph was unbelievably eye-opening, while at the same time resonating with something I felt I had known all along. It’s crazy how right all of the research cited in this book feels, and equally crazy how much we’ve ignored it. Highly recommend

I find myself referencing this book in conversation frequently. It raises lots of questions about the medical system and what we have accepted as normal in today’s society. Super interesting and informative, I’d recommend this book to pretty much everyone
