I feel like I should say something about why I gave this book 5 stars, since I am picky about giving those out. But I am not sure what to say. I can't figure out how to express what I liked so much about this book. It wasn't really a book that I flew through, or that I couldn't wait to pick up to see what happened next, but there was something about the feelings of the characters and how they were portrayed in the book that made it seem so powerful to me. I really have no idea how to say what I want to say, or even what it IS that I want to say. (I guess I need to stick to reading and not writing!)

An interesting and well-written book, provided a glimpse into several cultures which I was mostly unfamiliar with

Classic novel of NY Hassidic Jewish boy who wants to be an artist but it conflicts with his family values. I enjoyed all the religious detail and the struggle that was central to the story

go boy go!

I went in to this knowing that I was supposed to love it - but didn't. It's fine. I feel like I read it before maybe that's because it's so repetitive or maybe it's because I read it before.

Wow. Incredible, morose, depressing, beautiful.

ehn it was ok for a book in hs
