I love it when the books I read for school feel like the books I read for fun.
I just re-read this for probably the 10th time. I love this book.

Asher Lev is a young boy caught between the world of Orthodox Judaism and art. He's a prodigious talent, driven almost single-mindedly to create, but there is no place for serious art within the world he and his family inhabit. The book gets a little over-long in places but as an exploration of the anguish of trying to live true to two selves, it is a deep and moving read.
I really don’t know how else to describe this story other than raw and real. There is beauty and tragedy and courage to be found among it’s pages that stunned me. That being said, the 2nd half of this book was my favorite, I would give just that portion of the book 5 stars. The first half dragged a bit. The prose, though mostly beautiful and thought-provoking, was a bit clunky at times. But these are small critics. Overall, I found this novel to be a haunting dive into the mind and struggle of artist, searching for expression while caught between two different worlds.
