Chaim Potok is brilliant. Every book of his that I've read is slow, but builds emotion, complexity, and conflict together leading to incredible outcomes. I adored this book. I found myself in Asher's struggle trying to do right by his faith but being misunderstood or seen as destructive within it. This is a masterpiece.

A great classic read with a unique story. You won't read anything like this. The descriptions of the created art and the act of creating it was perfect. It was such a strange book, but was able to transport me to the time and place of this Jewish artist, trying to portray his feelings and life experiences in his artistic masterpieces.
The best part about the style of writing was I felt like I was painting and drawing with this Asher Lev. I grew up with him and knew his hurt and love and his strengths and weaknesses.

My mum gave this to me ages ago, and I actually really liked it. It talks about religon, art, and nuances sensitivily and entertainingly, and I really enjoyed it, though I think that the childhood section could have been shorter. A very thourough understanding of character.

Interesting book about a Jewish boy who is a child prodigy in art...painting and drawing. He is a fabulous artist, but at the cost of his family and maybe also his religion. It made me think about the choices that we make that could exile us from our family and even possibly destroy our faith. Can you live your dream and still be true to your religion?

I read this book in high school for class and that's probably why I didn't like it as much as other books. I would like to read it again just to see if my opinion would change.
