I adored this actually! It's unfinished and ends right in the middle of the action, so it can't really be compared to Dostoevsky's masterworks, but I really enjoyed it. 9/10 maybe

Before its completion, Dostoevsky was put in a fake firing line and then sentenced to years in Siberia. I feel this was the best possible thing to happen to him.

My plan to read all of Dostoevsky in 2017 is being hindered by everything Pre-Siberia being hot garbage. My god.

Could definitely see Dostoyevsky's main themes begin to emerge, dealing with the extremes of society, delirium and fantasy, familial relationships, guilt and atonement, justice - creating and shaping future characters and settings

Everyone was very pale all the time, lots of outbursts of crying, many extremes; and lots of fear, always someone was nervous of something. Netochka was never happy, only almost happy, and it was awfully depressing to see a child never experience pure joy that was simple!

I think it does imitate somewhat the simplistic way a child would tell a story, with cuts between periods of hernlife, but I really do not think she would understand the reasoning and emotion behind everything around her to the extent she tells us - also a lot of 'telling' and not 'showing', if you will... I liked Netochka's earlier life the best, involving her father ('But nowadays poverty is almost his happiness: it provides him with an excuse.')
