For book riots 2019 read harder challenge I have to read a work of manga. I’d never read it before so my librarian suggested I start with the manga version of Jane Austen’s Emma. That ended up being basically a storyboard of an Emma movie adaption and I didnt feel like I’d gotten the real manga experience. Tootling around on the Internet taught me that there was another Emma, one written originally for the manga format. It seemed well reviewed and available for the kindle. So I decided to give it a try.

Yes I’m laughing too that it’s basically the most British thing imaginable-a star crossed love story between a maid and a wealthy gentleman—despite being a translation from the original Japanese. What can I say, I have an instinct for finding that sort of thing.

Beautifully drawn, wonderful story. I gobbled up several volumes in one afternoon and spent the next day reading more until the main arc was complete.

Recommend for folks who like British romances in the Victorian era with class conflicts and who are either curious about or enjoy reading manga.

Emma's as much fun as Black Butler, without all the flying cutlery. This is a study of 19th century English manners just as technology is beginning to take off. Young lovers are separated by their position in society, which sets up the rest of the series, I expect.
middle school and up, lovely and accessible art

Good, but not amazing. I'll give the series a try for at least a few volumes.

I love this series so much! I'd forgotten just how much until I decided to read it again this week (I read it for the first time several years ago).
