I loved this. I don’t read a lot of classics, but this was fantastic. It was dark and gritty and challenging, and yet the prose was easy to understand.

The hardest thing about this book I think is the paragraphs on paragraphs of dense philosophy. So if you are alright with that you will enjoy this book.

This symbolism and themes of mortality and sin and beauty were so wonderfully explored, it was so darkly beautiful. It was peak gothic, and I can’t wait to read more of the Gothic period.

All the characters were wonderfully flawed and awful, Dorian was such a compelling character.

I'd say the character development is complicated because it isn't exactly developing...rather, Dorian Gray has a corruption arc. Very great book, but prospective readers be aware that there is Anti-Semitism that comes out of nowhere early on in the book. The man who runs the theatre Sybil Vane works at is described and characterized with gross stereotypes and caricatures.

My favourite thing about this book: the utterly beautiful prose. Wilde has such a way with words to make the reader think of things in ways they haven't before. Whilst reading I really felt I was in some of the scenes, they were described so thoroughly (although, sometimes there was too much detail). I love the morally grey characters. I love the exploration of punishment, sin, and the effects of taking justice into our own hands. I'll admit, I do not enjoy the philosophical dialogues in the book, especially from Lord Henry, he is an absurd character. I like his character in general, but not with most of the rants he goes on. He has such a twisted way of seeing the world, and it can be amusing. I like the influence he has on Dorian, it progresses everything, and does ruin him. I'm glad Dorian does realise at the end that Lord Henry isn't always right,
leading to his tragic, but deserved, death
I highly recommend this book to anyone. It may be a Classic, but it's vastly different from the others (from someone who generally dislikes Classics).

I expected more from you, Mr. Wilde?!

Two stars have been removed for antisemitism, misogyny, and also just like the middle chunk of the book which was SO BORING. The only good parts are the parts where the characters are speaking to one another. Two stars remain for that. One star has been awarded because somehow I never realized this book is categorized as horror, and it is, at its heart, a horror novel.

Total score: 3/5 stars
